Easy Ways to Prevent Dehydration

When you are overly exposed to heat, or you are overdoing physical activity, your body perspires to ensure your body cools down despite the heat. However, depending on the activity as well as the heat, the amount of perspiration varies, and when you lose too much water in the process, you can be dehydrated. This can be alarming since most of our body parts function with the help of water, and this is why we can survive weeks without food intake, but just a few days without water intake.

Generally, you are required to drink at least eight glasses of water in a day without much physical activity, and doing more physical exertion increases the water you will need in a day. It is important to know and recognize the signs that you are experiencing dehydration as this can lead to a life-threatening situation such as the following:

  • Dark urine
  • Fatigue or sleepiness
  • Infrequent urination
  • Thirst

All of these symptoms can lead to constipation, weakness, and the formation of stones in the kidney that harm the kidneys. Feeling thirsty is already a sign that your body needs some fluid, so at the first signal of thirst, immediately drink water and avoid some flavored juices and sodas.

So, what are the ways to avoid this to happen?

1. Drink plenty of water – as mentioned, drinking at least eight glasses of water and more than eight when doing exercise or other physical activity can help you regulate your fluids, and avoid dehydration. Especially now that the earth is getting hotter and the temperature is rising, drinking plenty of water will help you keep your body hydrated.

2. Avoid hot environments – hot environments make you perspire and lose water. So, it is important that you do not let yourself get exposed too much in hot environments. When you are living in tropical areas where hotter seasons are more frequent, ensure that your house has thermal insulation installation to keep your house protected from the heat of the sun.

3. Avoid doing too much physical activity in hotter environments without water intake – doing more physical activity also perspires you. When doing exercise, make sure that you are always hydrated, and when you can, do not do your exercise in hotter places.

4. Drink water before and after sleeping – drinking in the morning after waking up can help your organs a lot and water is a good start-up fuel for your organs.

5. Always carry with you a bottle of water – always bring with you a bottle of water so whenever you get thirsty, you can have something to sip in. Being thirsty while not having anything to drink will force you to ignore your thirst. And when it becomes your habit, it becomes harmful.

6. Eat vegetables and fruits that have a lot of fluid in them. There are fruits and vegetables that have natural water in them such as lettuce, watermelon, tomatoes, and citrus fruits. Getting water with the nutrients is like leveling up your rehydration.
